The Fall

I had always thought I could stand alone
Sit by myself, so high on my throne
My fortress was strong and ready to fight
All sides were clear, no enemy in sight

My castle defended by a great mighty wall
Who could have seen my impending fall
Prepared to be stronger, adding to my might
Still could not stop a thief in the night.

She was ever so cunning to avoid my alarms
No weapon was fired, no call to arms
My might and ignorance so doomed to fail
She poisoned my wine as well as my ale

My fortress is crumbled, an unsightly mound
Lost in the rubble, an old rusty crown
Life is too short to waste on a wall
That only in time is destined to fall
